Template Guide
How do you drill and tap rifle receiver for scope mounting bases?
I have basic tool skills and drill press, etc., but no gunsmithing experience. How should I determine positioning of the holes for the bases, should I make or or buy a template or guide? What gunsmithing tools I should purchase?
B-Square makes a nice jig for this that will save you a lot of grief. You can check Midway USA or Brownells. The spacing will depend on what type of rifle you have. Be careful when drilling that you don't drill through the barrel into the receiver on the forward mounts unless you want a paper-bag full of remnants.
