Soft Pastels
How do I use Soft Pastels?
I just got a set of the for christmas. a VERY nice set. I'm excited to learn how to use them, bu I have no idea how...I know how to use oil pastels, oil paint, watercolor, copic markers, etc...However, I have never really had to interact with soft pastels, could someone explain to me how to work with them to get good quality pictures? ^ ^ Thank you for your time!
if you know how to use all those other mediums, you should have no problem.
Soft pastels are like charcoal sticks. colors blend easily with a tortillion or your finger, but you have to be careful not to over work areas...tends to get muddy. i'd go with a stiff paper with a little texture...the colors need something to hold on to. Ummm..very messy...and fun. cleans up w/ soap and water.
finished pieces don't stand up to time well unless framed w/ glass or there are sprays out there for preservation, but they may discolor.
play with em just like charcoal...start off working with 3d things: spheres, cubes, etc. & go from there.
