What are crochet templates, and what software can I use to create patterns?
I love to crochet, but have only ever followed pre-made patterns. I would love to have a go at creating my own patterns and designing my own items, and I've looked at some guides, but they all say that it is good to start with a crochet pattern template. What is this? I've tried to look around the internet to see what they are, but I don't understand. I thought a template was like, something you draw round.
Also, does anyone know any good computer software for creating crochet patterns?

I found a "crochet template" here: http://www.crochetandknitting.com/sockstemplate.htm It seems to be a fill-in-the-blanks pattern, basically a pattern that you write in what you are doing as you go. I have never used one and it is not how I go about making up patterns.
You don't really need software or templates, or anything else, to make up a crochet pattern. Instead, you need to understand a little about how crochet works. As you'll know if you have ever crocheted, you can either go in circles (useful for anything round or cylindrical) or you can go in lines (useful for things that are basically rectangular). You can also add or remove stitches as you go. These patterns use a combination, and they explain quite a bit about where the patterns came from and how to get circles and cylinders the right size. I suggest them as a stepping-stone to making up your own patterns.

Any other crochet pattern will also serve, if you use it to notice how different combinations and techniques work.
As for innovating, you can take a couple of different approaches, depending on what you are trying to make. One perfectly reasonable way to begin is to decide what you want to make, take a bit of extra yarn, and try making it. Something basic and either square or round is a good place to start. Chain a line or a ring and fiddle with the number of stitches until the finished piece is the size you want.
You could also be a little more organized about it. Make a small, test swatch using the same yarn, hook, and stitch(es) that you will use, and measure them (width and, if you need it, length). Then, figure out what shape and size you want, and how many stitches you will need to make it that size. Yes, some of this process may look like math.

Don't rule out free form crochet, either, especially if you have a lot of odds and ends to use up. You can make much larger pieces by patching together smaller pieces that you make up as you go.
