How can I stop my calligraphy pens from blotting?

I'm trying to teach myself calligraphy with a set of old-style dip pens. I think my technique is sound, but when I start writing after I dip the pen, the pen blots into a big blob of ink. After a few strokes it writes better, but I'm still left with a mess on my paper. How can I stop this from happening?

several things may be going wrong:
1. new nibs are coated with substance that repels ink---repels rust, etc. new nibs need to be cleaned with gentle soap/water/alcohol and dried well before use.

2. ink is too thin. some inks are made for fountain pens and need to be 'watery'. try higgins eternal or other inks made for dipping.

3. dipped too much ink. when you dip a cleaned nib, wipe off excess on edge of container or do a little 'shake' to get extra droplets off. too much ink may be running off the nib when it is released upon touching the paper.
