i scan my cartoon drawings but the color is blotched up?
Pencil is too light to scan sometimes but it works alright. Marker works better and looks okay to draw the outline of the characters. To color it, I want to use my Adobe Photo program to fill in the white spaces but the lines of the drawing are disconnected in certain parts; so, when I fill a space with my paint bucket, it ends up filling whatever open space it's connected with with that color. I then have to manually use the paint brush to fill in the gaps to seperate each place that needs different color on my characters. What can I do to avoid having to fix this problem? Should I ink my drawings? Would that be better? I don't know much about inking or what to use for it. I'm not looking for something really proffesional like in the comic books. Just something that looks nice enough and defines the lines of my art so that the scanner can read it right. Any suggestions? Thank you so much!
It's definitely better to scan an inked illustration. It's a good idea to have at least three different sized ink tips, for inking. You can use felt-tip markers, gel ink ball-point pens, brushes or pens with India ink.
Pencil often doesn't have enough contrast to make a good scan, but if you can boost your contrast in the scanner settings, that will help.

There's probably about a thousand approaches to your problem..
You could knock-out the white by selecting it with the Magic Wand tool - The default Tolerance (32) should be fine, check Anti-Alias, uncheck 'Contiguous'.
Make your selection and delete [the white part].
To add your color...
Create a new layer in the layers palette and drag it underneath your ink layer. You can now use the brush tool to paint underneath your ink, and you won't have the spill issues you're having. : )
Another option for knockout of your ink image would be to adjust the layer transparency option in the Layers palette (the default is 'Normal'). You could try setting the transparency of your ink later to 'Multiply'. This will also allow pass-through of your color layer through the white areas of your ink layer. Also, using a transparency mode for knockout is not destructive, which is nice.
I'd try all of the different transparency options, you might find a happy suprise.
